How many tiles do I need?
When figuring out tiling costs, you first need to know how many tiles you need. This will vary based on your chosen style, such as square tiles, subway-style tiles, pinwheel or herringbone.
1. Take precise area measurements
Need to cost up floor tiles? Grab a measuring tape and measure your floor's length and width. For walls, do the same thing.
Remember to adapt the way you measure based on what style of tiling you're doing — for example, if you're only tiling halfway up the wall as a splashback or similar feature; you won't need to measure the whole height of the wall.
2. Calculate how many square metres of tiles you need
To calculate the total square metres of tiles needed, it's time to multiply those measurements. For example, if a wall measures 6 metres in length and 4 metres in height, multiplying these dimensions (6m x 4m) gives a total of 24 square metres. Repeat this process for each wall or floor you plan to tile, then add those totals together.
For example, if you're tiling the walls of a 3m x 3m bathroom with 4-metre-high walls, the math would be:
Calculate the area of one wall: 3m (length) x 4m (height) = 12 square metres for each wall.
As there are four walls in the bathroom, multiply the area of one wall by 4 to get the total square meterage for the walls: 12 square metres (one wall) x 4 = 48 square metres in total.
3. Add a little extra for overage
You've figured out the total amount of square metres you need, which is great. Next, add an extra 15%. This accounts for cuts, waste, and the potential for tile breakage. It also safeguards you against supply shortages mid-project.
Let's use that bathroom example again:
48 square metres + 15% = 55.2 square metres.
That's how many square metres of tiles you should purchase for your project.
4. Calculate how many boxes of tiles you need
Tiles are typically packaged in boxes, each labelled with the total square metres of tiles it contains. To find out how many boxes you'll need, divide the total square metres required for your project by the square metres per box of tiles.
Let's say the tiles for the bathroom project above come in boxes of 10 square metres:
55.2 square metres ÷ 10 = 5.52
So, you'd need to purchase six boxes of your chosen tiles.

What impacts the cost of tiling?
- Tile type: From budget-friendly linoleum tiles or vinyl tiles perfect for a utility area or laundry room to higher-end porcelain tiles for your kitchen and bathroom, the type of tile you choose will be the main factor influencing the cost of your tiling job
- Additional costs: As well as the cost of the wall and floor tiles themselves, you'll need to consider if there are any additional costs related to your chosen tile type. For example, premium tiles often require careful installation by a professional tiler, and certain other types of tile may need post-installation sealing. All of these costs can quickly add up
- Tile size: Installing large tiles can be pricier than smaller ones as they require more precision and expertise when installing. Professional tilers are recommended, rather than a DIY job
- The size of the space: Larger areas need more tiles, which means you'll be spending more money. You can keep costs down by only tiling what you need — for example, you could try a tiled feature wall or half wall instead of a fully tiled wall
- Customisation: If you have any customised areas or complex design features, your tile installation cost will rise as it will take more time and precision
- Preparation: If you're tiling a wall and your old tiles need removal first, this will increase labour costs. Floors often need preparation before tiling, with tasks such as installing underlay or waterproof membrane increasing labour and materials costs
- If it's a bathroom: Bathrooms have unique requirements. They require a waterproof layer, and the floor should be sloped for effective water drainage. Tiling a bathroom can cost up to twice as much per square metre compared to a regular room
